Following the great response to Cancer Vision 2025: The Science Pathway to Effective Treatments and Services project and report, Newton’s Apple carried out a follow-up project, Delivering Innovative Cancer Diagnostics and Treatments to Patients. The objective was to collectively identify opportunities for a greater use and uptake of innovative cancer diagnostics and treatments for the benefit of patients. This was done by considering ways in which a selection of ‘bottlenecks’ could be addressed. These were:
Bottlenecks in the process of moving innovative diagnostics and treatments from the laboratory to Phase I trials.
Bottlenecks in the development and use of Personalised Medicines, in particular issues concerned with pre-screening of subgroups who could benefit from novel treatments.
Bottlenecks resulting from ethical issues, including deliberations of ethical committees, the use of human tissues and patients’ concerns.
Bottlenecks in post-licensing uptake of innovative diagnostics and treatments in the NHS.
Unmet needs in the development of innovative diagnostics and treatments of rarer cancers.
Newton's Apple called for evidence from stakeholders and invited them to offer solutions to address these bottlenecks. The results from this consultation exercise were analysed by an Advisory Working Group and the findings were used to produce recommendations in the final Report of the project.
Newton’s Apple is very grateful to those who submitted evidence for this consultation. The excellent responses were highly valuable to the compilation of the report.
